Family of Origin Exploration

Many of our adult behaviors and beliefs are shaped in our childhood and adolescence from our family of origin or those primary caregivers and siblings who we grew up with.

FOO work informs us as to what helped shape you.

Family of Origin (FOO) work is a valuable part of each client’s process because it can increase self-awareness to any of the following:

  • Communication styles
  • Conflict resolution
  • Expression of love/support
  • Family rules and roles
  • Guidance through emotions
  • Mental health issues
  • Physical health issues
  • Religious beliefs and behaviors
  • Socioeconomic types
  • Trauma & Addiction

Areas Where Family of Origin Is Used

While the therapist supports the client having one foot into the past, we always have another foot in the present, processing if a learned belief from younger years is impacting your present-day issue.

Anxiety

Occasional anxiety is a normal part of the human experience but if it feels like you’re anxious more than you’re not, it’s time for something different.

Depression

There’s a difference between sadness and depression and many people have difficulties distinguishing between the two and that’ OK.

Trauma

Trauma is any event or series of events that was distressing and it never had a chance to resolve itself. The thing that haunts you needs attention.

Loss & Grief

Often associated with death, the truth is, loss or grief spans all phases of life. From divorce,  career change, medical diagnoses, adoption and more.
